Team GBI bid to win Curtis Cup under way in Ireland

The Curtis Cup got under way today with the Great Britain and Ireland team aiming to win back the trophy from the USA at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, near Dublin.

The USA is defending the trophy after defeating the best of Great Britain and Ireland's female amateur golfers at St Louis Country Club in Missouri in 2014 by 13-7.

GB&I, led by captain Elaine Farquharson-Black for the first time, will be looking to build on their last home success in the biennial tournament when they secured a memorable 10 ½ - 9 ½ victory at Nairn in 2012. It was GB&I’s first victory in the match since 1996 at Killarney.

It is the 39th edition of the match, which was first played in 1932. The two teams of eight golfers will compete in three foursomes and three fourball matches on the first two days and then eight singles matches on the final day on Sunday.

The R&A has provided £170,000 of funding towards the staging of the event this year.

Bronte Law and Olivia Mehaffey got the match under way when they faced the American pair of Hannah O'Sullivan and Mariel Galdiano in the first foursome of the morning.
