For Formby, hosting The Amateur Championship in 2009 is particularly fitting and not just because it coincides with the club's 125th anniversary. Formby has long cherished its strong links with the amateur game, with its tree-lined links course having hosted three Amateur Championships and five Boys Championships, and dozens of other top events including, most recently, the 2004 Curtis Cup. While Formby is the main host of the 2009 Amateur Championship, the staging of the opening two strokeplay rounds will be shared with West Lancs, a few miles further south along the coast. A beautiful and traditional links course, West Lancs has never before hosted the Amateur, but the club has provided two notable winners of the event in the form of Alan Macfie, the very first Amateur Champion, and Harold Hilton, who won four Amateur titles in addition to his two Opens. |
