Although The Open is the obvious public focal point each year of The R&A's involvement with championship golf, in reality it is only one of 11 championships and international matches which come under its administrative umbrella. These events include the Junior Open Championship, the Boys Championship, seniors championships and the Walker Cup. Each event is listed with brief historical details, past records, entry requirements and future venues.
The Open was played for the 141st time in 2012 at Royal Lytham & St Annes . From humble beginnings at Prestwick in 1860, The Open has grown to become one of the world's greatest sporting events. Click here to visit TheOpen.com, the Championship's award-winning website.
From the Junior Open Championship to the Boys Amateur Championship to the Seniors Open Amateur Championship, The R&A organises top-class amateur events to test all ages. The pinnacle is the Amateur Championship, which has challenged the world's best unpaid players for 125 years.
Each year, The R&A organises or co-sanctions world class team events. The Boys Home Internationals and the Jacques Leglise Trophy are contested annually, while the St Andrews Trophy and the flagship Walker Cup Match between Great Britain and Ireland and the USA are played biennially. The Senior Open Championship is an event staged by The R&A in collaboration with the European Senior Tour. In 2013, the Championship visits Royal Birkdale.
The championships will visit Antaya, Turkey in 2012, where the men battle it out for the Eisenhower Trophy while a parallel event for women, the Espirito Santo Trophy, is held at the same venue prior to the Eisenhower.
