International Matches

Each year, The R&A organises or co-sanctions world class team events, which foster international competition in addition to forging international friendships. The Boys Home Internationals and the Jacques Leglise Trophy are contested annually, while the St Andrews Trophy and the flagship Walker Cup Match between Great Britain and Ireland and the USA are played biennially.

Walker Cup

The Walker Cup is a biennial international match contested by the leading amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland and the USA. The Match is decided by a combination of foursomes and singles matches held over two days. Selection is regarded by many as the ultimate achievement and a stepping-stone to professional success.

St Andrews Trophy

Like the Walker Cup, the St Andrews Trophy is a biennial international match which takes place in non-Walker Cup years. It is contested by most talented amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland and the Continent of Europe using a format which mirrors that of its more well-known counterpart.

Jacques Leglise Trophy

The Jacques Leglise trophy is the under-18 equivalent of the St Andrews Trophy. It is played annually, though it shares a venue with its older brother whenever the senior competition is being played. Many of today's top professionals, like Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, have contested the Match in the past.

Boys Home Internationals

The Boys Home Internationals began life in 1923 as a match between the boys teams of England and Scotland, played on the day before the Boys Amateur Championship. In 1972, a match between Ireland and Wales was added. And since 1996, the internationals have been played as a round robin event between the four countries over three days.
