Defending champions England dominate morning foursomes
On the first morning of the 2010 Boys Home Internationals at Southerness Golf Club, England have made an excellent start to the defence of the title they won at Hankley Common, last year. After the foursomes, they lead Wales by four points to one going into the afternoon’s singles matches.
In game one, which got underway in heavy rain and a stiff breeze, the opening English pair of Paul Lockwood and Nick Newbold registered and emphatic 6&5 victory over Wales’ Mitchell Reed and Callum Roberts. Having reached the turn four holes up, they took both the 13th and 14th holes to record the most dominant victory of the morning.
James Burnett and Greg Eason, in game three, and then Harry Casey and Jack Heasman in the fifth posted wins of 5&4 and 4&3 respectively, before Wales picked up their first point of the 2010 event when Luke Jackson and Zac Galliford overcame Callum Shinkwin and Toby Tree by two holes.
But it was not enough to prevent England going to lunch in a commanding lead, as the English pairing of Oliver Carr and Nathan Kimsey increased the deficit to three points with a 2&1 victory in game four.
2009 runners-up Ireland are taking on Scotland in the day’s second contest, and they, too, have established a significant lead as they head into the singles. Despite not winning their ties by the same margins that England had managed, they reach the half-way stage with a four-point advantage.
Victories came from Paul Dunne and Jeff Hopkins, 2&1; Liam Harnett and Gary Hurley, 3&1; Dermot McElroy and Colm O’Sullivan, 5&4; and Alex Gleeson and Jack Hume, who defeated Grant Forrest and Daniel Hendry by one hole.
A solitary half-point for Scotland was claimed by Conor O’Neil and Paul McPhee, who halved their tie with Irishmen Chris Selfridge and Matthew McKnight. After 12 holes, the Scottish pair had built up a two-hole lead, but that would slip to one by the time they reached 18. And there they would falter, handing Ireland the chance to take half a point and, with it, a 4 ½ - ½ scoreline midway through the match.
The afternoon singles are now underway.
