R&A takes Rules School to Central and South America

The R&A Rules Department is set to embark upon a particularly busy three weeks with three Central and South American Rules Schools scheduled to take place in Costa Rica (Jan 15 - 17), Colombia (Jan 21 - 23) and Chile (Jan 27 - 29).

Representing The R&A at the schools will be Alan Holmes, Chairman of the Rules of Golf Committee; Chris Hilton, Deputy Chairman of the Rules Committee; and Kevin Barker, Assistant Director - Rules.

The schools will focus on the game's main playing Rules (Rules 12 - 28), their definitions and their practical application. Through a series of seminars which will include analysis of televised incidents and role-play scenarios, attendees will have the opportunity to challenge and develop their knowledge before taking the Rules Exam.

Successful candidates will receive certification acknowledging their level of Rules knowledge. Many associations will, in turn, use the exam as a guide to whether the individual should be considered for on-course officiating duties.

We're very much looking forward to this three-week Rules Education trip to the Americas,' said Alan Holmes. There are ever-increasing numbers of enthusiastic officials there who would relish the opportunity to expand their Rules knowledge, and it's great to be able to offer them that chance.'

For those that hope to go on to officiate in national and even international competitions, guidance will be given on being a committee member, course marking and, most importantly, the art of officiating - maintaining total confidence in one's Rules Knowledge when faced with a high-profile decision or when delivering a ruling to a seasoned Tour professional.

By the end of the visit, R&A Rules Schools will have been held in nine Central and South American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru and Venezuela.
