South Africa make it six-in-a-row at AAGTC

Hosts and defending champions South Africa led from start to finish to win the 2011 African Amateur Golf Teams Championship at The Club Benoi.

It is the sixth successive time since The R&A supported tournament was launched in 2001 that South Africa have won the prestigious biennial four-man event, combining for a final round six-under-par 210 and a 72-hole total of 835, beating Namibia by 57 shots.

Graham van der Merwe, who holds a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) of 98, led the way with a four-under-par 68, with teammate Riekus Nortje carding 70 along with 72s from Daniel Hammond and CJ du Plessis.

Glen de Waal (70), Roux Jeffrey (71) and Andre Huysamen (74) sealed Namibia’s runner-up spot on 892, while 73s from Stefan Andersen and Mathew Omondi and a 75 from Joseph Karanja saw Kenya finish third on 900.

The 20-year-old Van der Merwe, who posted earlier rounds of 74-72-72, said: “It was the first round this week with no three-putts on my card and it feels just great to make a worthwhile contribution.

“I had 12 putts on the front nine and 13 coming home and that is a vast improvement on the last three days.”

The individual title, with rounds of 68-65-70-70 for a 15-under-par 273, went to Nortje who finished 10 shots clear of the field.

“I have to admit, it’s great to come out on the winning side after a round like today, but really, it was that second round 65 that nailed it for me,” he said.

Hammond’s final round 72 saw him tie with Stuart Smith of Botswana (69) and Kenya’s Stefan Andersen (73) for individual second place on five-under.

Speaking after a final round 72, Nortje’s South Africa teammate Du Plessis summed up their strong team spirit.

He said: “I think the main thing is that, when one of us had a bad day, the rest of the team backed him up. All four of us, at one time or another, contributed to the team’s victory and we are very proud of this achievement.”
