The R&A is committed to encouraging the playing of golf globally. Using funds generated by The Open Championship, its Golf Development Committee and Training Panel currently spend up to £4 million annually and are particularly receptive towards requests to support public facilities, junior golf and coaching initiatives.
A major priority for The R&A is providing funding for coaching and the development of the game around the world. In recent years, much focus has been directed towards financing development in countries where golf is a relatively new sport. Major contributions are made to professional golf, women’s golf at both amateur and professional levels and organisations responsible for grassroots activities.
The R&A also provides financial support for international amateur team events for men, women, boys and girls throughout the golfing world. In addition, course machinery and playing equipment are sent worldwide.
A University Scholarship Scheme is funded by The R&A Foundation. It is aimed at assisting in the education and development of young amateur players during their course of study.

Last weekend, eight players from the R&A-supported Japeri Project played in the first phase of the Rio State Junior Championships.
