Six nations represented in last eight of the Amateur

Championship - 05 Jun, 2002

Zane Scotland
Round three marked the exit of Walker Cup player Nigel Edwards and squad member Graeme Clark, both strong contenders for the title. An out of touch Edwards lost to David Price, a 21-year-old former Welsh Youth champion, who was two under par when the match finished on the 16th green. He had been four up after 11 holes, but lost concentration to concede the 12th, then hung on to the end. Tim Rice of Limerick was four up with seven holes to play against Clark, but the Doncaster player came back strongly, winning the 13th and 15th with birdies and also taking the 17th. In a shaky finish Rice holed a tricky six-footer for victory by one hole. But in the next round Rice came up against Jamie Elson and although he established a one hole lead after six holes, Elson won five in a row to take charge of a match he won by 3 and 2. In the big clash of the day, four times Walker Cup player and former Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme, faced 19-year-old full-time amateur Zane Scotland who set a cracking pace winning three of the first four holes. But he confessed that "against Gary you have to be on your guard to the end, he never gives up". Wolstenholme duly reduced the deficit with a birdie three at the tough 13th hole, but Scotland hung on for a 2 and 1 win. In the quarter finals tomorrow morning he will face Alejandro Larrazabal of Spain. Jamie Elson plays Thomas Sundstrom of Finland, conqueror of Scotland's Stuart Wilson. Martin Sell of England, plays Welshman David Price and Australian Andrew Buckle takes on Graham Gordon of Scotland. Six nations represented in the last eight of the Amateur Championship - a true measure of the global game."
