Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or Swing (Rule 13-2) – It is a basic principle of the game of golf that you must play the ball as it lies (unless a particular Rule provides otherwise). If you press down or move grass around your ball you will be penalised as you are not allowed to improve the lie of your ball, or the area of your intended stance or swing.
