Former R&A Foundation Scholar, Francesco Molinari, and his brother, Edoardo, won the World Cup at Mission Hills in China yesterday (Sunday). Francesco, the younger of the two at 27, received funding to help him continue to play competitive golf while completing his academic studies at university in Italy.

And it was Francesco, currently ranked number 37 in the world, who guided his country to a one-stroke victory. After holing two long birdie putts on the 12th and 13th greens, he played a superb bunker shot at the last to hold off the challenges of both Ireland and Sweden.

“It’s a big story,” said the 2006 Italian Open champion. “For a few days everybody will notice golf in Italy as well.”

For the 2009-2010 academic year, five talented, young Italians will receive R&A Foundation funding totalling £8,500. This group includes 2009 Amateur Champion and Open Championship Silver Medallist, Matteo Manassero.

“The great majority of R&A Foundation Scholars come from the home nations but a large number of Italian students have also received such funding,” explained The R&A’s Director of Golf Development, Duncan Weir.

“Our relationship with the Italian Golf Federation is excellent and they continue to produce golfers of the highest calibre.”
