The Tour de las Americas will receive continued support from The R&A in 2010 and 2011 with grants of US$ 50,000 per year. The grants, which will assist the TLA to continue working on behalf of professional golf in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, represent a further strengthening of a relationship between the two bodies that began in August 2005.

“It is a huge honor for the Tour de las Americas to extend its ties with a partner as strong and respected around the world as The R&A. Their support encourages our Tour to keep moving forward and work even harder on behalf of professional golf in our region,” commented the TLA Commissioner, Henrique Lavie.

“Our main goal is to provide our players with the opportunities they deserve in order to grow and develop in their careers. We know there are many players in our countries with the ability to follow in the footsteps of stars as celebrated as Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, who became the first Latin American to win two Major Championships with his victories at the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters,” added Mr. Lavie.

The TLA has operated in Latin America and the Caribbean since September 2000 and is a Member of the International Federation of PGA Tours. Over the last seven years, it has co-sanctioned twenty-seven events with the European Challenge Tour and three with the Canadian Tour.

“The R&A is delighted to announce this extension of its support of the Tour de las Americas,” said The R&A’s Director of Golf Development, Duncan Weir. “This tour continues to offer strong playing opportunities for players of many nationalities, and several of its members are sure to feature in our Open Championship in the future.”

The TLA also works on the development of emerging markets and focuses on supporting professional golf in more established golfing nations. Such a process involves solid relationships with the Golf Associations and Federations from Latin America and the Caribbean. It is in the best interests of the TLA to be involved with the top events held in the region, offering each country an organized and respected Tour that will support their efforts to develop golf in any possible way.
