2006 Junior Open Champion upsets ex-WAGR Number One

The winner of the 2006 Junior Open Championship, Patrick Reed of the USA, again fulfilled the promise he displayed at Heswall four years ago with victory at the Jones Cup Invitational last weekend, defeating former World Amateur Golf Ranking Number One Victor Dubuisson in the process.
Reed, a semi-finalist at the 2008 US Amateur Championship, and current European Amateur Champion Dubuisson both posted final-round 74s for 54-hole totals of six-over-par 222s at Ocean Forest Golf Club, Sea Island, Georgia. It would only require one extra hole to separate the pair, however. France’s Dubuisson found water leaving Reed to wrap up the win with a good up-and-down, typical of a day which saw him hit only 11 of 18 greens in regulation.
Current WAGR number three Dubuisson had, at one stage, enjoyed a three-shot lead, but bogeys at 15, 17 and 18 cost him dearly. The young American, Reed, who is presently ranked 57th, took full advantage and is likely to be rewarded with a place in the Top 25.
The 2009 US Amateur Champion, Byeong-Hun An finished in fourth place, two strokes back from the leaders while the 2009 Boys Amateur Champion, Tom Lewis, finished tied-eighth on 227.
Last year, Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn, who succeeded Reed as Junior Open Champion in 2008, underlined her credentials when she defeated Lewis at the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy.
The 2010 Junior Open Championship will take place at Lundin Golf Club, Fife, on 12 – 14 July.
