A number of The R&A’s Foundation scholars will compete in the Espirito Santo Trophy and the Eisenhower Trophy at the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico.
This week, Nastja Banovec will represent Slovenia and is a scholar at Dundee University. For Wales, Megan Lockett of Birmingham University is also competing. In addition, Clare Queen, formerly of Glasgow University, is captaining both the Scottish women’s and men’s teams.
Next week, Mathias Eggenberger, who has won The R&A’s Foundation Scholars Tournament for the past two years, is representing Switzerland. He is joined in the Swiss team by fellow Stirling University student and R&A scholar Marco Iten.
Others competing in the Eisenhower are Juan Miguel Heredia for Ecuador; a scholar at Durham University. Ireland's Stuart Grehan (pictured below), from Maynooth University, a Great Britain and Ireland international in the 2016 St Andrews Trophy, also features.
Duncan Weir, Executive Director - Working for Golf at The R&A, said: “The R&A Foundation has supported student golf for over 30 years and this has benefited many players from a number of countries throughout Europe and beyond.
Last year three of Great Britain and Ireland’s winning Walker Cup team were R&A Foundation scholars and this trend is being continued in Mexico in both the Espirito Santo and Eisenhower trophies.
We look forward to two exciting weeks in Cancun featuring the very best amateurs in the world.”
