Registering for the Rules Academy is free, simple and hassle-free. You can use an active Facebook profile to create a new user account and log back in during subsequent visits. Once you’ve signed up and ready to start, choose one of The R&A’s ambassadors, Padraig Harrington or Suzann Pettersen, to mentor you through your Rules Academy journey.
Videos, images, diagrams and explanatory text will guide you through the most commonly encountered Rules situations, which takes approximately 3 hours in total but can be completed at your own pace.
At the end of the course, there is an opportunity to test your knowledge and understanding by undertaking The R&A’s Level 1 Exam and receive an official certificate. For competitively-minded candidates that wish to challenge their family and friends, a new monthly leaderboard has been introduced in addition to the ‘all time’ leaderboard.

For example, The Ladies’ European Tour (LET) have a requirement for all aspiring Tour players to complete the Rules Academy as part of their induction programme. This year Rosie Davies won the prize for achieving the top mark in the exam in the fastest time with recent two time winner on the LET, Aditi Ashok also achieving 100% in the online exam.
Derek Ervine, a club golfer from Northern Ireland who has gone on to attend The R&A’s Level 2 and 3 Rules and Referees courses, said “I thought the Academy website was well laid out and very inviting saying ‘come on and have a go’. It took you through the tutorials in a structured manner. The test at the end gives you the chance to again test your knowledge.”
