Canada’s Chris Crisologo and Paraguay’s Milagros Cháves were crowned champions at the South American Amateur in Argentina.
First played in 2006, the event is open to both men and women and supported by The R&A. In addition, The R&A also helped 30 amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland and beyond travel to and play in the championships at Martindale Country Club near Buenos Aires.
Crisologo won the men’s event by four strokes with a 13-under-par total of 275. With his victory, the Canadian secured a place in the starting field for the European Amateur Championship to be played in the Netherlands in June.
The highest placed player from GB&I was former R&A Foundation Scholar, Alex Gleeson. The Irishman finished in joint fifth position at seven under par after four rounds of stroke play. Current Boys Amateur and Junior Open champion, Pedro Lencart from Portugal, finished in a three-way tie for 12th place with a four-under-par total of 284.
In the women’s event, Cháves was victorious with a six-under-par total of 282, finishing one shot ahead of the chasing pack. She will now play in the European Ladies Amateur Championship in Slovakia in July as a result.
Ireland’s Paula Grant, another former R&A Foundation Scholar and current Curtis Cup squad member, took third place on four-under-par 284. Scotland’s Hannah McCook recorded a final round of four-under-par 68, the joint lowest score of the day, to finish tied for fifth.
Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development at The R&A said, “This has been an excellent week towards which the players have contributed hugely, both on and off the course. The South American Amateur has also given the thirty players from outside South America, subsidised by The R&A, an opportunity to play 72 holes in good weather on a testing golf course.
“In 2019 the event will be played in Santiago, Chile from 10 - 13 January and we will again look to several nations to continue their support by sending their very best players to compete at this wonderful event.
“Finally, congratulations to Chris and Milagros on their respective victories.”
