The R&A - Working for Golf

Tributes paid to George H W Bush

George H W Bush, the 41st President of the United States of America (1989-1993) and an Honorary Member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has passed away at the age of 94.

Mr Bush had a long connection with golf, and with The R&A. In 1922 his Grandfather, George Herbert Walker, a past President of the USGA, donated the Walker Cup for biennial competition between teams of amateur golfers representing Great Britain and Ireland and the United States of America. Mr Bush's Father, Prestcott Bush Snr, was also a President of the USGA; and his brother Prescott Bush Jnr was a Royal and Ancient Member.

In 1990 Mr Bush was elected an Honorary Member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club and in 1994 gave the Reply on behalf of new Members at the Annual Dinner, in response to the Toast by The Rt. Hon. Viscount Whitelaw.

On being invited to become an Honorary Member of the Club, Mr Bush wrote to the Club saying, “It would be a great pleasure and privilege to be part of such a rich and venerable sporting tradition. I hope the invitation is not contingent on having a respectable handicap; but I will guarantee you this; should I be accorded this marvellous honour, I would replace my divots."
