Tributes are being paid to renowned Swedish TV commentator and journalist Göran Zachrisson who passed away at the age of 83 today.
From 1966, he has covered The Open as a TV commentator for Swedish broadcasters, including Viasat, and was known widely and affectionately in his homeland as ‘Mr Golf’.In 2016, Goran celebrated working at his 50th Open Championship as compatriot Henrik Stenson went on to lift the Claret Jug at Royal Troon.
He wrote about golf for a number of publications including Svensk Golf, where he was also editor in the 1960s, Golf-Store Magazine and Golf Digest.
He was a member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and past president of the Association of Golf Writers (2015-18). He was also a member of Royal Liverpool and several other Swedish golf clubs.
Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “Goran was a tremendously popular figure throughout golf and made a substantial contribution to the sport through his writing and broadcasting over many years. It meant so much to him when Henrik Stenson won The Open at Royal Troon and made history for Swedish golf. He will be greatly missed by his fellow members of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and all who had the privilege of working with him at The R&A. I would like to send our sincere condolences to his family and friends and his colleagues at the AGW.”
