Stirling student Lorna McClymont seeks third straight R&A Student Tour Series win, while Europe’s top student golfers jockey for places in The R&A Student Tour Series Final.
The plus 5.5 Scottish international heads to the final qualifying event, The R&A Student Tour Series – Spain at Infinitum Hills in Tarragona, Spain, high on confidence after winning the last two tournaments. The plus 5.5 handicapper from Milngavie Golf Club is the player in form after last month’s victory in The R&A Student Tour Series – Portugal at the tough Troia Golf Resort layout South of Lisbon, adding that title to her victory in The R&A Student Tour Series – Ireland last October.
McClymont's Impressive Form
McClymont, ranked 172nd on the World Amateur Golf Ranking®, was the only woman in the Troia field to break par over the three days, returning a one-under-par 71 on the final day over one of Europe’s hardest courses to run out a four-shot winner over University of Stirling teammate Nicola Slater. The English player, who bettered McClymont by two shots to win The R&A Student Tour Series – Scotland last September, also makes the trip to Spain.
Women’s Amateur Champion Louise Duncan, who also attends Stirling, is in the field too. The Scot, who was recently selected to the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup squad, is the highest ranked player in the women’s draw at 36th on the WAGR table. Not only did Duncan win last year’s Women’s Amateur at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club, she took top amateur honours in the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie. A joint 10th place finish among the game’s best professionals saw her walk off with the Smyth Salver as low amateur.
Duncan will use Infinitum Golf Club as a warm up for the Augusta Women’s Amateur Championship over the Masters venue later this month. She is one of two Scots in the field along with 2021 Girls’ Amateur Champion Hannah Darling.
David Kitt Leads
Three great Fife layouts, not Augusta National, will be on minds of the 59 men teeing it up in Tarragona. The top players after the Tour Series – Spain will qualify for The R&A Student Tour Series Final on 4-6 April 2022 taking place over Dumbarnie Links, and The Castle and Jubilee courses in St Andrews.
Maynooth University players Ryan Griffin and Jordan Boles are both in action in Spain. They were declared joint winners at Troia after darkness brought a three-hole playoff to an end. Max Weaver is also in the men’s draw. The Englishman, a student at Edge Golf College, made the playoff with Griffin and Boles only to be eliminated at the first extra hole.
All three will have to keep a close eye on David Kitt. The Maynooth player, winner of The R&A Student Tour Series – Scotland at Fairmont Golf Club last September, narrowly missed out on the Troia play-off after shooting up the field with a closing two-under-par 70 to finish fourth
Infinitum Hills, formerly Lumine Golf Club, was voted last year as Europe’s best golf resort. The par-72, 6,378-metre course with views of the Mediterranean, the Muntanyes de Prades Massif, and the Llaberia Natural Reserve should prove a demanding examination for Europe’s top student golfers considering it is the permanent venue for the final stage of the DP World Tour Qualifying School.
