History
The Vagliano Trophy started as a match between Great Britain and France in 1931 and was played annually until 1939 and between 1947 and 1949. It became a biennial event thereafter.
Of the early encounters, Great Britain were victorious in 15 of 16 matches with the 1934 tie resulting in draw.
Great Britain had also played a biennial match against Belgium from 1949 to 1957, and in 1959 the two matches were replaced by one seeing Great Britain take on a team representing the Continent of Europe.
The Vagliano trophy, given by French golfer Andre Vagliano, was introduced and used for the new event.
