The Open Water Initiative
The Open became one of the first major global sporting events to remove single-use plastic water bottles in a move supported by the UN.
The initiative has been implemented in partnership with Bluewater and has the support of many of the sport’s greatest players including Tom Watson who was present at Royal Portrush for its launch.
The 148th Open at Royal Portrush will live long in the memory – a record attendance outside of St Andrews and a script that was written for an Irish winner as Shane Lowry beat all comers to lift the Claret Jug with a memorable display on the Antrim coast. Relive the story of The 148th Open here.
AIG Women’s British Open
Hinako Shibuno provided a fairytale story at the AIG Women’s British Open by winning her first major championship, the only time she has played outside of her native Japan. During the championship, it was also announced that Royal Porthcawl will host the 2021 AIG Women’s British Open while the inaugural R&A GolfSixes Challenge was also held at Woburn.
AIG Women’s British Open Prize Fund
We announced that the prize fund for the AIG Women’s British Open would increase to US$4,500,000, an increase of almost 40% for 2019, in recognition of the importance of the Championship and women’s golf.
The R&A 9 Hole Challenge
On the eve of The 148th Open at Royal Portrush, 42 club golfers, including two from Australia, lived the dream of playing on golf’s greatest stage in The R&A 9 Hole Challenge. This initiative will expand its global footprint in 2020 with New Zealand coming joining The R&A 9 Hole Challenge. Golf New Zealand will run qualifying events November through to February with the final being played during the 101st New Zealand Open.
We are still in the middle of a very busy season of amateur events but already we have seen new champions crowned in our 2019 amateur events, including James Sugrue and Emily Toy who won The R&A men’s and women’s amateur championships.
