Over the firm, fiery and delightfully presented links, Zhao reeled off seven birdies in a row en route to a six-under-par 67 and a healthy advantage at the top. After a stream of early pars, Zhao knocked a nice approach into ten feet on the 6th and rolled in the birdie putt.
That provided the catalyst for a purposeful push and the reigning French Women’s Amateur champion claimed six more birdies as she surged to the top of the leaderboard.
“It’s the first time I’ve been on a run like that,” she said of her bag of birdies. “I’ve had lots of birdies in rounds before but never seven in a row. I really enjoyed this test. It’s my first experience of proper links golf and it’s super fun. I hit it straight which really helps, and I can get my ball rolling a lot.”
A posse of players, including Fairhaven Trophy winner Elizabeth Wilson and the former Florida State Amateur Champion Sophia Dyer, are sitting on two-under while Spain’s Martina Navarro Navarro, a beaten finalist in the 2023 Championship, opened her qualifying campaign with a one-under 72.
