Killiney Golf Club
Killiney Golf Club have diversified their water supply over the last 5 years in order to improve supply and water resilience. The Club now harvest water from the clubhouse roof, from drainage ditches around the site and a small onsite borehole.
Killiney Golf Club historically had a low water requirement for greens only irrigation (3,750m3 a year). This was sourced from a combination of an old onsite borehole (2,300m3 a year) and mains back up (1450m3 a year) water which fed a small 1,200m3 storage tank. In recent years, the Club have added tee & approach irrigation to the system, increasing water demand by approximately 75% (2835m3 a year), to make a total annual demand of 6585m3.

To service this extra demand, the Club increased their water supply by utilising rainwater drainage from the site. An additional1,200m3 pond was constructed onsite, and natural drainage ditches across the site were redirected to flow into this pond which generates 2,500m3 a year.

The Club also had severe drainage problems on the 9th Fairway. Further investigation revealed that a drainage pipe from the clubhouse ran across this fairway and was broken in several places, leading to water discharged under the fairway. This was repaired and redirected into the ditch system, and into the storage pond, allowing a further 600-800m3 a year to be harvested. This amount could potentially be increased in future if all the clubhouse roof is drained into the same drainage outlet. The Club's capital costs for the project involved some new pipe and pond liner, with the rest of the project costs made up of labour.

Future projects for the club involve recommissioning a 30m3 ground tank, and utilising water storage for toilet flushing and other grey water within the clubhouse to further reduce reliance on mains water.
