Update on 2010 Equipment changes related to grooves

When The R&A and USGA announced changes to the groove and punch mark specifications as part of the 2010 Equipment Rules, an implementation period was provided to give golfers, manufacturers and the game ample to time to adjust.
Whilst the updated rules required all new models of clubs (except drivers and putters) manufactured on or after January 1, 2010 to conform to updated specifications, Model Local Rule G-2 was created to allow competition organisers the option to either implement the new groove specifications or to allow golfers not competing at elite level to continue using clubs which conformed to the Rules in effect in 2009 until at least January 1, 2024. We have continued to review whether the updated Rules should apply to all golfers and have concluded that they should continue to remain effective only through the use of Model Local Rule G-2. Any future decision to fully apply the January 1, 2010 specifications to all golfers will be clearly communicated at that time and will not become effective until at least four years from the date of that decision. The Information Database continues to be a resource to assist golfers in determining whether their irons, wedges, hybrids and fairway woods comply with the Model Local Rule. Clubs appearing in the Database have been submitted to The R&A or USGA and evaluated to determine that they meet the requirements of the updated Groove Rules.Further information on the Groove and Punch Mark Specifications can be found at Info For Players or by contacting equipmentstandards@randa.org
