The Walker Cup is a prestigious international match bringing together leading amateur male players from Great Britain and Ireland and the United States of America for the biennial contest.

The Walker Cup has been played by many of the sport’s greatest golfers and selection to play in the historic match is often regarded as the highlight of an amateur’s career. Past competitors include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Collin Morikawa, Sir Michael Bonallack, Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy. The Walker Cup began in 1922 and the United States of America leads the series 39-9, having won the last four contests, with one match tied.

GB&I Team Selection Criteria

  • The current Amateur Champion if eligible.
  • The current US Amateur Champion if eligible.
  • The top-five GB&I players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR ®) on Wednesday 6 August with a minimum divisor of 18.  Should The Amateur Champion and/or US Amateur Champion occupy one of the five guaranteed WAGR positions the fourth/fifth automatic positions will not transfer to the sixth/seventh ranked GB&I player(s) in WAGR. Captain picks the remaining places.
  • Should one of the top-five WAGR players be unavailable or does not have a minimum divisor of 18 the place will not transfer to the sixth ranked GB&I player in WAGR. The place will become an additional Captain’s pick.
The team will be announced on Monday 18 August. GB&I eligibility is based on being eligible to play for one of the Home Nations.

2025 Match

The 50th Walker Cup will be staged at Cypress Point, Pebble Beach in September 2025. Cypress Point, a private enclave located just down the road from Pebble Beach Golf Links, is the site of six previous US Opens. It will be the first time the Walker Cup has been held over the Californian coastal venue since 1981. The United States of America will defend the trophy after their 14.5-11.5 success at the Old Course in 2023.
