Roman Road Course

The course offers a diverse test, transitioning from inviting, open fairways near the Resort Hotel to a technical middle section threaded through mature woodland. Players must navigate winding streams and significant changes in elevation, requiring a thoughtful strategy to find the right angles into the tricky, sloping greens.

History

Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Snr, the Roman Road sits on the estate where resort founder Sir Terry Matthews was born, formerly the site of the Lydia Beynon Maternity Hospital.
It is named after the Via Julia, an ancient Roman highway that once connected the region to the nearby fortress of Caerleon.

This historical weight is felt throughout the round, as the ancient highway still crosses the fairways today, serving as a permanent reminder of the valley's storied past.

The challenge

The course offers a diverse test, transitioning from inviting, open fairways near the Resort Hotel to a technical middle section threaded through mature woodland.
Players must navigate winding streams and significant changes in elevation, requiring a thoughtful strategy to find the right angles into the tricky, sloping greens.

The layout's variety ensures that players are tested on every club in the bag, particularly as they move from the open expanses into the tighter, more technical sections of the course.

Enhanced accessibility

Endorsed by EDGA, the Roman Road has undergone a rigorous enhancement programme to ensure a world-class experience for all categories of golfers with a disability.
  • Bunker accessibility: Many fairway bunkers are raked using ride-on equipment, ensuring access for players aligns with professional maintenance standards.
  • Structural adaptations: Greenside and practice bunkers have undergone sand swaps and modifications to make entry and exit manageable.
  • Targeted enhancements: Accessibility works are specifically concentrated on the fairway bunkers of holes 10, 12, 13, 15, and 17.
  • Flexible solutions: For signature pot bunkers where permanent changes are restricted, temporary ramps are utilized to ensure every hazard remains a fair strategic test.

A stage for the world's best

The Roman Road is no stranger to elite pressure, having hosted the Wales Open on the European Tour (2005–2007) and the Wales Senior Open (2015–2016).  It has crowned celebrated champions such as Miguel Angel Jiménez and Robert Karlsson.  Today, it continues this legacy as the home of The G4D Open until 2028, proving that while its history is ancient, its outlook is firmly focused on the future of an inclusive game.
