Partnering with AIG

The R&A has partnered with American International Group, Inc. (AIG) since 2019 to enhance the renowned AIG Women’s Open. Over the course of the partnership, the two organizations have elevated the AIG Women’s Open as a premier championship for both players and spectators, raising the profile of women’s golf worldwide.

Growing the AIG Women's Open through reach and experience

Established in 1976 and previously known as the Women’s British Open, the AIG Women’s Open is one of five major championships in women’s golf and is, today, regarded as an iconic stop on the LPGA tour. The success of the championship has continually grown since 2019 when AIG officially partnered with The R&A as the title sponsor. Together, the two organizations have amplified the AIG Women’s Open — increasing viewership and the total prize fund year over year. The championship received the 2024 LPGA Gold Driver Award for Best Player Experience, which honoured the organizations’ work toward enhancing the championship for players and viewers alike.

A shared commitment to elevating women’s golf

Both The R&A and AIG are dedicated to advancing women’s golf — creating a premier experience for today’s athletes and setting the stage for the sport’s future. Together, they have given women’s golf a global platform by extending viewing accessibility to international audiences and have prioritised athlete recognition by more than tripling the total prize fund. The growth of the AIG Women’s Open has also opened doors for women golfers to play at the most prestigious venues in professional golf. In 2024, the championship was played at the historic St Andrews in Scotland — known as the birthplace of golf. AIG Chairman and CEO Peter Zaffino spoke to the success of the collaboration when he announced AIG and The R&A would extend their partnership through 2030: “We became the title sponsor in 2019 with an overall objective of demonstrating leadership in profiling the elite athletes who compete in the AIG Women’s Open on a global stage and ensuring that the Championship was elevated and recognised for the progress that has been made in both the prize money and the selection of venues for these exceptionally talented women.”

Beyond golf: Advancing Women in Business, Sports and Society

In tandem with their work to elevate women’s golf and the AIG Women’s Open specifically, AIG and The R&A have given precedence to developing women’s leadership both on and off the course. Leading up to the 2023 championship, AIG held a leadership forum for emerging women leaders in the insurance and reinsurance industry to network with AIG leaders. AIG also named 2018 winner Georgia Hall an AIG Global Ambassador — championing her as a role model for young girls just starting out in golf. In the same vein, The R&A facilitates the Women in Golf Leadership Programme to actively support women and girls learning the sport through its “Golf for All” initiative.
