Golf is open to all
Contested for the first time at Formby in 1969, the R&A Senior Amateur Championship is open to players aged 55 years and over. Charlie Green has been the most successful player in the history of the championship, winning six times in seven years from 1988.
For the first time, the R&A Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur championships were played concurrently at Royal Dornoch in 2022 – with Mike McCoy and Terrill Samuel crowned winners. That new format continues at Saunton in 2024.Health

By maximising the uptake, use and impact of scientific research, it has been consistently highlighted that golf is a health-enhancing activity:
- at The Open, AIG Women’s Open and leading amateur championships
- in a comprehensive R&A Golf and Health Report (2016-2020) for global use and translated into Chinese and Japanese
- raising awareness with global government ministers/ heads of state, national federations and bodies such as the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf (UK)
