Contested for the first time at Formby in 1969, the R&A Senior Amateur Championship is open to players aged 55 years and over. Charlie Green has been the most successful player in the history of the championship, winning six times in seven years from 1988.

For the first time, the R&A Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur championships were played concurrently at Royal Dornoch in 2022 - with Mike McCoy and Terrill Samuel crowned winners. That new format continues at Frilford Heath in 2026. In 2025 England’s John Kennedy won with an 11-under-par total of 277, finishing seven shots ahead of Todd White and Danny Nelson from the USA and Ireland’s Jody Fanagan.
