The Amateur Championship is one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur championships in the world.
This year a world-class field featuring golfers from 41 countries is competing at Royal Liverpool and West Lancashire from 15 to 20 June.This represents the Championship's record 19th staging at Hoylake, with 288 players vying for one of the top titles in amateur golf and to follow in the footsteps of past champions including Bobby Jones, José María Olazábal, Sergio Garcia and Matteo Manassero.Contested over two stroke play rounds and then match play format, the winner will earn exemptions into The Open, the US Open, a DP World Tour event and, by tradition, an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament provided they retain their amateur status.The first Amateur was held at Hoylake in 1885 where 44 players from 12 clubs competed.The Amateur Championship is free to attend. The World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®) comprises a women’s ranking and a men’s ranking for elite amateur players, administered by The R&A and the USGA. WAGR currently incorporates over 7,100 events with over 8,300 players.
