Who we are

The R&A's purpose is to open golf to the world.

As custodians of the game, our aim is to unite golf and golfers through common rules and governance, inspire through the staging of world class championships including The Open and AIG Women's Open, and lead through working to shape the future of golf with our partners.
The R&A governs the Rules of Golf, the World Handicap System, equipment standards and rankings in partnership with the USGA, while supporting both established and emerging formats of the game.  Working collaboratively, we aim to grow participation, champion sustainability and broaden access, particularly for women, juniors and underrepresented groups, ensuring golf thrives for generations to come.

Our role today is built on a rich heritage that begins with The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, founded in 1754.  Over more than 250 years, the Club evolved into one of the most influential institutions in golf.  In 2004, The R&A was established to take on responsibility for governing the sport in partnership with the USGA, staging The Open, and developing golf worldwide. Today, we continue to combine history with innovation, delivering lasting economic and social value and creating inspiring experiences for players, fans and communities across the world.

In the next five years we will work with our partners to attract 22 million additional golfers, generate more than £1.5 billion in economic benefit through our championships, create more than £25 billion in social value, establish more than 200 strategic partnerships and generate more than 5 billion fan interactions.

What we do

As custodians of the game, we seek to unite, inspire and lead golf.

We aim to unite the sport in all its formats through effective governance.  We are intent on leveraging golf’s traditions, whilst being proactive and flexible, as the game evolves.  As long-term custodians, we will continue to promote golf as a sport for all.
The R&A stages world class championships including The Open and AIG Women's Open, along with a series of leading amateur events. These events feature the very best players in the world, and have the power to inspire people to engage with golf as fans or players, with money generated through elite championships reinvested back into the sport.

We have a responsibility to look to the future and are committed to taking the lead and working collaboratively with our partners in areas where we can add unique value and achieve systematic and scalable impact.  We invest in programmes and initiatives to ensure a growing and sustainable future for golf.

Working at The R&A

We strive to be an employer of choice for individuals motivated to work in golf and sport. We  are proud to deliver a compelling employee experience and enable a culture of performance and innovation. We are an equal opportunities employer and prioritise creating an inclusive culture where talent can flourish. We believe in the potential of everyone and open our doors to those who share those values. All appointments will be made based on merit; however, we particularly encourage applications from women, people from minority ethnic communities, LGBTQ+ people and disabled people.  Our Global Headquarters are based in St Andrews, Scotland and we have offices in Singapore and Buenos Aires, Argentina; as well as colleagues based in other countries around the world.  We have over 300 staff working across our group.  As a global workforce, we value the opportunity to come together in person and recognise the importance of flexibility in how we work.  Our hybrid working approach supports many roles in balancing time on-site with the option to work from home on some days each week, where this suits the role and individual needs.  We also recognise that some roles require on-site presence due to the nature of the work, and hybrid working may not always be possible.  In call cases, you will be supported by your line manager to agree a working pattern that works best for you, your team and the needs of the organisation, with attendance at the office or site visits aligned to company policy.

How we work

We are proud to have a culture where everyone can thrive, and we make commitments to each other on how we want to operate and support each other in our work. R&A staff act with integrity; think long term; work collaboratively; bring passion and aim high – we welcome applications from candidates who are motivated to work in a similar way.    Act with integrity: We do what’s right. We do what we say we will. We treat each other with respect.  Work collaboratively: We operate as one team. We build partnerships with purpose. We value timely and effective communication.   Aim high: We set high standards for ourselves and others. We are blood in our ambition. We strive to get better, individually and collectively.  Think long term: We stand in the future and shape our sport for the better. We plan ahead. We take ownership.  Bring passion: We care deeply about our purpose. We show up with energy. We are resilient.
